Larissa Costella is a practicing artist currently living and working in her hometown of Calgary, Alberta Canada. She graduated in 2015 from the Alberta College of Art + Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Distinction, majoring in Painting. In 2014, she had the opportunity to spend a semester attending the GlasgowSchool of Art in Scotland and showcase her work internationally. She works primarily with painting mediums, as well as miniature sculpture.
My artistic practice is inspired by familiar, idealized edible objects and how they are portrayed in popular culture, by old advertisements as well as current trends. My paintings are influenced by my passion for baking, and the associated feelings of nostalgia and comfort. Based on a life-long fascination with all things tiny, I also enjoy creating miniature clay sculptures, which can inform my paintings, or be tiny playful artworks unto themselves. By using the visual aesthetics of food in a lighthearted manner I deal with themes such as desire, idealization and celebration.
